The eigenvalue problems of the buckling loads and natural frequencies of a braced beam on an elastic foundation are investigated. sented. The eigenvalues vary with the different The exact solutions for the eigenvalues are preparameters and are especially sensitive to the brace location. As the beam of a continuous system has infinite eigenvalues and these eigenvalues are influenced differently by a brace, the eigenvalues show rich variation patterns. Because these eigenvalues physically correspond to the structure buckling loads and natural frequencies, the study on the eigenvalues variation patterns can offer a design guidance of using a lateral brace of translation spring to strengthen the structure.

Tunable band structures of polycrystalline graphene by external and mismatch strains

Lacking a band gap largely limits the application of graphene in electronic devices. Previous study shows that grain boundaries (GBs) in polycrystalline graphene can dra- matically alter the electrical properties of graphene. Here, we investigate the band structure of polycrystalline graphene tuned by externally imposed strains and intrinsic mismatch strains at the GB by density functional theory (DFT) calcu- lations. We found that graphene with symmetrical GBs typ- ically has zero band gap even with large uniaxial and biax- ial strain. However, some particular asymmetrical GBs can open a band gap in graphene and their band structures can be substantially tuned by external strains. A maximum band gap about 0.19 eV was observed in matched-armchair GB (5, 5) I (3, 7) with a misorientation of θ = 13° when the applied uniaxial strain increases to 9%. Although mismatch strain is inevitable in asymmetrical GBs, it has a small influence on the band gap of polycrystalline graphene.

Underlying principle of efficient propulsion in flexible plunging foils被引量:1

Passive flexibility was found to enhance propulsive efficiency in swimming animals.In this study,we numerically investigate the roles of structural resonance and hydrodynamic wake resonance in optimizing efficiency of a flexible plunging foil.The results indicates that(1)optimal efficiency is not necessarily achieved when the driving frequency matches the structural eigenfrequency;(2)optimal efficiency always occurs when the driving frequency matches the wake resonant frequency of the time averaged velocity profile.Thus,the underlying principle of efficient propulsion in flexible plunging foil is the hydrodynamic wake resonance,rather than the structural resonance.In addition,we also found that whether the efficiency can be optimized at the structural resonant point depends on the strength of the leading edge vortex relative to that of the trailing edge vortex.The result of this work provides new insights into the role of passive flexibility in flapping-based propulsion.

Energy barrier for configurational transformation of graphene nanoribbon on nanotube

A graphene nanoribbon (GNR) has two basic configurations when winding on the outer surface of a carbon nanotube (CNT): helix and scroll. Here the transformation between the two configurations is studied utilizing molecular dynamics simulations. The energy barrier during the transformation as well as its relationship with the interfacial energy and the radius of CNT are investigated. Our work offers further insights into the formation of desirable helix/scroll of GNR winding on nanotubes or nanowires, and thus can enable novel design of potential graphene-based electronics.

A molecular dynamics investigation of the deformation mechanism and shape memory effect of epoxy shape memory polymers被引量:2

Following deformation, thermally induced shape memory polymers(SMPs) have the ability to recover their original shape with a change in temperature. In this work, the thermomechanical properties and shape memory behaviors of three types of epoxy SMPs with varying curing agent contents were investigated using a molecular dynamics(MD) method. The mechanical properties under uniaxial tension at different temperatures were obtained, and the simulation results compared reasonably with experimental data. In addition, in a thermomechanical cycle, ideal shape memory effects for the three types of SMPs were revealed through the shape frozen and shape recovery responses at low and high temperatures, respectively, indicating that the recovery time is strongly influenced by the ratio of E-51 to 4,4'-Methylenedianiline.

Nonlinear dynamic response of beam and its application in nanomechanical resonator被引量:3

Nonlinear dynamic response of nanomechanical resonator is of very important characteristics in its application. Two categories of the tension-dominant and curvaturedominant nonlinearities are analyzed. The dynamic nonlinearity of four beam structures of nanomechanical resonator is quantitatively studied via a dimensional analysis approach. The dimensional analysis shows that for the nanomechanical resonator of tension-dominant nonlinearity, its dynamic nonlinearity decreases monotonically with increasing axial loading and increases monotonically with the increasing aspect ratio of length to thickness; the dynamic nonlinearity can only result in the hardening effects. However, for the nanomechanical resonator of the curvature-dominant nonlinearity, its dynamic nonlinearity is only dependent on axial loading. Because of the interaction between film and substrate,the film buckling stress can vary significantly,depending on the delamination geometry,the film and substrate mechanical properties.The Mexican hat effect indicates such interaction.An analytical method is presented,and related dimensional analysis shows that a single dimensionless parameter can effectively evaluate the effect.

Tensionless contact of a finite beam:Concentrated load inside and outside the contact zone被引量:1

For a finite beam with a nonzero gap distance, an asymmetric concentrated load can be either inside or outside of the contact zone. A new governing equation is given for the case of a concentrated load outside the contact zone. By numerically solving the left-side and right-side contact lengths of the beam, a criterion is established to determine whether the concentrated load is inside or outside the contact zone. A more general approach on the tensionless contact of a beam is thus presented.
