The present research, a case study, analyzes the pronunciation problems encountered by a Chinese learner of English on the assumption that these pronunciation errors were systematic, and not randomly made and that these errors reflect interference from the different sound systems, different rules of combining sounds into words and different prosodic patterns of the learner's native language. Data were collected over a prolonged period of time, twelve weeks, when the present researcher acted as the subject's pronunciation tutor for her International Teaching Assistant Oral Fluency in the Intensive English Program of West Virginia University. Following the Contrastive Analysis Hypothesis, potential pronunciation difficulties for the subject were listed by comparing the English sound system to that of Chinese. Speech samples of the subject's pronunciation were taken through oral readings and spontaneous speech, both recorded monthly. By using Error Analysis, the subject's pronunciation difficulties were diagnosed into seven types, and three categories were used to analyze these errors on the basis of her native language linguistic background. These analyses help to establish a clear understanding of some characteristic pronunciation problems the subject has had, which impede her comprehcnsibility and oral fluency.
